I was at Pleasant Valley Church after a service, and Anita (the mother of Andy, a guy who was a friend of mine in school) was trying to hurry and prepare kosher food for Dale (Andy's brother). Evidently it was supposed to be Dale's barmitzvah, but they were holding it at the church. This was the first time I had ever heard of Dale, Anita, or anyone in their family being Jewish. I thought it was a bit odd that they were trying to do this at the church, but Anita told me, while she was setting up the tables in the Fellowship Hall, that she wanted to have it where Dale's friends were, rather than making them go somewhere else to do it.
Anita seemed all flustered because of the pressure to get things done, but I never really jumped in and helped out. I was just watching. I think I was a bit stunned by the whole thing. I saw her taking food out of the oven and putting more food into it in the kitchen, and I think Dale showed up periodically to see how things were going. People were leaving church for the day, and Dale's friends were supposed to be sticking around. I think some of them were leaving because they didn't have any idea what was going on. The whole thing reminds me of the Jewish family on South Park. Anita really reminded me of Sheila, the mom.
