Em (wife) and I start out in Virginia/Maryland from seeing our parents. It seems that we may even live there again, and we decide that we want to move to Tennessee. We are just in our car, and we're driving along one of the interstate highways, and I realize that my ears are popping like crazy because we're going up a mountain. It didn't look like we were, though, and so that's why I didn't realize it until my ears started popping.
Finally we come to the ridge of the mountain, and we have to go down the other side. There's a visitor's center at the top, (kind of like the Afton Mountain area, even though that's in the wrong direction for us to be going in real life) and I believe we stopped off there for a short bit to prepare for the rest of the drive. We talked shortly to some guy there, and he was asking us where we were going. We told him we were moving to Tennessee, and pointed and basically said, "In that direction."
Something started to look strange about going down the other side of the mountain, and I think the guy mentioned it, but we got into the car and went anyway. As we got to the road, we looked, and the road essentially went straight down, but kind of like a spiral staircase. We started down the steep road, going to the right, and then only about 20 feet later, it wound around to the right and made a 180 degree turn, all the while going down.
Em was very scared, and I wasn't too happy about this either. Even though there were guardrails all around us, the we didn't feel safe. We had a lot of trouble seeing the road either because it was too steep (so it disappeared down in front of my hood) or it would get really foggy in places and we couldn't see two feet in front of us.
We crept down very slowly, but we finally made it. When we got down to the bottom, we pulled off and parked, got out, and looked back up, and it only went straight up about 100 feet or so, but we were definitely at the bottom. We were glad to be done with that, and we were able to look into the direction of our destination, and see for miles and miles and miles. It seemed to stretch on forever. We got back into the car and continued our drive.
